The Persecution of Christian Convert: Sadhu Sundar Singh

The story of Sadhu Sundar Singh is one of profound transformation, radical surrender, and unwavering faith. Born into a wealthy Sikh family in India, Sundar Singh was groomed from a young age to follow in the religious footsteps of his ancestors. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he encountered Jesus Christ—a moment that would not only redefine his faith but also his entire life’s purpose. This testimony explores the journey of Sadhu Sundar Singh, highlighting the key moments that led him from the depths of despair to the heights of spiritual fulfillment.

Sundar Singh was born in 1889 in the village of Rampur, Punjab, into a devout Sikh family. From an early age, he was deeply religious, immersed in the teachings and traditions of Sikhism. His family was influential, and his future seemed secure. However, despite his outward adherence to his faith, Sundar struggled with deep spiritual unrest.

As a teenager, Sundar became increasingly disillusioned with religion. He found no peace in the rituals and teachings he had grown up with. His soul was troubled, and he began to question the very existence of God. This inner turmoil led him down a dark path, where he contemplated suicide as a means of escaping his spiritual emptiness.

In a desperate act of defiance, Sundar publicly burned a Bible as a symbol of his rejection of Christianity. Yet, his heart remained restless. On the night of September 16, 1904, he decided to end his life. Sundar planned to throw himself in front of an oncoming train if God did not reveal Himself to him. That night, as he waited for the dawn, something miraculous happened.

At the darkest moment of his life, Sundar had a vision of Jesus Christ. He later described seeing a figure filled with light who spoke to him, saying, "How long will you persecute me? I have come to save you; you were praying to know the right way. Why do you not take it?" This vision profoundly impacted Sundar. In that moment, he surrendered his life to Christ and experienced an overwhelming sense of peace and purpose. His despair was replaced with a deep, abiding joy.

The Cost of Discipleship

Sundar’s conversion to Christianity was not without cost. His decision to follow Christ was met with fierce opposition from his family and community. He was disowned by his father, ostracized by his relatives, and faced threats to his life. Yet, Sundar remained steadfast in his faith, convinced that Jesus had called him to a higher purpose.

Forsaking his family’s wealth and status, Sundar adopted the life of a wandering sadhu—a holy man dedicated to spiritual pursuits. Clothed in a simple saffron robe, barefoot, and carrying nothing but a New Testament, Sundar began to travel across India and beyond, sharing the message of Christ.

As a sadhu, Sundar Singh embraced a life of poverty, simplicity, and absolute dependence on God. He traveled extensively, preaching the gospel in remote villages, towns, and even hostile territories where Christianity was often met with resistance. Despite the dangers he faced—ranging from physical assault to the threat of death—Sundar continued to proclaim the love of Christ with boldness and compassion.

Sundar’s ministry was marked by miracles, deep spiritual insight, and a profound connection with the suffering of others. He often walked barefoot in the Himalayas, enduring extreme weather conditions to reach those who had never heard the gospel. His teachings emphasized the importance of a personal relationship with Christ, the power of prayer, and the need for total surrender to God’s will.

Sadhu Sundar Singh’s life and testimony continue to inspire Christians around the world. His commitment to Christ, his willingness to suffer for the gospel, and his deep spirituality have left an indelible mark on the Christian faith. Sundar’s writings, which include reflections on the Christian life and mystical experiences, offer a unique perspective that bridges Eastern and Western spiritual traditions.

Sundar Singh disappeared in the Himalayas in 1929, and his body was never found. Yet, his legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched and the powerful testimony of a man who found everything he was searching for in Christ.

The story of Sadhu Sundar Singh is a powerful reminder of the transformative power of Jesus Christ. From the depths of despair, Sundar found hope, purpose, and a new identity in Christ. His life challenges us to consider what it means to truly follow Jesus—to surrender all for the sake of the gospel and to trust that in Him, we find everything we need. Sundar Singh’s testimony is a beacon of faith that continues to light the way for believers today.
